Computer Activities Using Google Docs for Grades 6-8 is an activity book, which was created to accommodate teachers who would like to utilize Google Docs to enhance their elementary school curriculum. Google Docs is a free, on-line software suite that gives students access to word processing, spreadsheet, presentation, and drawing programs. It enables students to create documents, edit, share and use them to collaborate with their peers. All files are stored by Google and are accessible from any computer that has internet access, giving students the opportunity to continue to work on their school projects from home. The only requirement for use is an e-mail address. If your students do not have e-mail addresses, contact your school’s technology coordinator to discuss them any ways to provide free e-mail solutions for your students. The activities in Google Docs for Grades 6-8 were designed for use in a computer lab or classroom setting where students have access to on-line computers. The book is arranged into five sections, which correlate to the use of the five different types of software applications available in Google Docs: Word Processing, Spreadsheets, Presentations, Drawings, and Forms. There are twenty activities contained in this book that address the many different ways in which software can be used by elementary educators. This offers teachers the opportunity to confidently take classes into the computer lab, and present a well rounded lesson, using Google Docs. Each activity is noted as it pertains to the topic of study, and everything needed to implement each lesson effectively, is contained within the lab. Each activity has been successfully used in the classroom, and is designed to be completed in one, forty-five minute computer lab session. No knowledge of software applications is required to teach the activities contained in this book. Each lab provides you with the overall purpose of the lesson, learning objectives, materials required, and detailed step by step procedures on how to successfully implement the lesson, along with informative pictures that show you exactly what to do. Although each lesson contains specific subject matter, all labs in this book can be easily adapted to fit your specific lesson plans by easily using your own data. The labs are designed to illustrate the many ways that computers can be used in your classroom to reinforce your specific topic of study, and may provide you with a variety of ways to incorporate technology into your curriculum.
